So I’m sitting in the Glasgow Underground office one day and Sarah (Grum’s manager, sits opposite me) sent me this video of Sasha playing at Warung…
After months of searching I finally track down the man who made it. His name is Daniel Trim. He’s a DJ from Barcelona and he fuses rhythm and melody with the same kind of skill and panache as artists like Paul Kalkbrenner, Robert Dietz and Nick Curly… but with that Iberian sense of how to make a party feel sunkissed – even in the middle of winter.
“O Day” is the stone-cold killer on this EP. It reminds me of one of my favourite Jimpster tracks, his astounding mix of Kiko Navarro’s “Siempre”. It has similar key elements; strings, hypnotic synths, wiggling rhythm and rubbery bass. But where Jimpster’s work is the essence of a summer party, “O Day” has a moodier vibe. The kind of record you can lose yourself in completely as our European nights get darker and the clubs get re-energised.
Of the other three tracks; “Mind” sounds like a Cecille remix of Basic Channel, “Hummm” is the kind of heavy, heads-down tech-house groove that would punctuate a Nic Fanciulli set and “Dali” is another of Trim’s memorising music journeys (with hints of Radiohead’s Street Spirit (Fade Out) running through it).
