Admin is the work of 20 year-old Bristol producer Adam Wickens. Originally from Winchester but now fully ensconced in Britain’s first city of bass, Wickens music moves from broken beat soundscapes that highlight his eclectic taste in producers (Theo Parrish, Maurice Fulton, J Dilla, Mehdi) through to the kind of lush 808 beatdowns that one would expect from someone producing in the same era as Eats Everything, Christophe and Julio Bashmore.
His music carries an otherworldly quality, and he’s definitely not a slave to any classic sound. So much so that “Eskimo”, an Inuit inspired piece of chords and rhythm that sounds like a lost Four Tet cut, has found its way out of dance music entirely to the ipod of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. For the more 4/4 minded, the flip-side to this release, “Whatever We Want” is the kind of deep, slow-burning house track that is perfect for warming up dancefloors or basking in the sunshine.

From their breakthrough remix for Roots Manuva at the end of 2011, Glasgow’s latest production stars Mia Dora have had a busy year so far. A stand-out track on Jaymo & Andy George’s Moda Black compilation lead to a full EP for Moda Black. Their single release on Glasgow’s hip High Sheen label has been played by djs from Jackmaster to Seth Troxler and they have remixes due for Parker and latest Crosstown Rebels signing, Walker & Royce. For Admin they take their heavy bass sound to a new dancefloor busting level with some 808 madness and eerie, strung-out breakdowns.
This is I’s debut release “Round and Round” came on the excellent “New Love Volume 2” compilation for Leeds’ Love Not Money label. Here he takes Admin’s deep-as-you-like original and delivers a more up tempo, bass-driven house groove that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Hot Waves compilation.
